Thank you for your comment. You’ve misunderstood what I was saying, but my phrasing wasn’t clear. I’ve edited the text to now read:

“However, changing it means that everyone who had your previous username but wasn’t already in contact with you won’t be able to reach you.”

This is the scenario I’m concerned about. In Signal, you have *one* profile. If you publish your username, and then you have to change it, the username you *had* published is useless. People cannot use the old username to reach you.

This also happens with Delta Chat if you ask the QR code be regenerated, but the need for this is mitigated by using the method I mentioned in my article.

@yourautisticlife "with Signal: you must change your username. However, changing it means that everyone who had your username won’t be able to reach you anymore." This isn't how usernames work in Signal. Once someone is chatting with you, you can change your username, and they can still chat with you. Usernames are only used when initiating a chat with someone.

Your use case with Delta chat also works with Signal. You can change usernames as soon as you message someone.
